Republican leaders celebrated Juneteenth over the weekend, even though their holiday tweets came with a rainbow-colored black power fist emoji added automatically by Twitter [ How Social Media Platforms are Marking Juneteenth, Which Commemorates the End of Slavery in the US, by Andrew Hutchinson, Social Media Today, June 19, 2021].
On #Juneteenth we commemorate the moment the order, “All Slaves are Free”, ushered in Emancipation. We remember the millions of African Americans who suffered the evils of slavery & we cherish their countless contributions that have enriched every facet of American life.— Mike Pence (@Mike_Pence) June 19, 2021
On June 19, 1865 enslaved Americans in Galveston, TX finally received word of their freedom. As #Juneteenth is a commemoration of this date, let it serve as a reminder that all men are created equal w/ certain unalienable rights such as Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness. pic.twitter.com/dF5Nb3tKch— Tim Scott (@SenatorTimScott) June 19, 2021

#JuneTeenth2021 is “a history lesson that must be taught”— Senator John Cornyn (@JohnCornyn) June 19, 2021
This was an embarrassing sight. It completely undermined Republican arguments that Juneteenth was not a “woke” holiday, but a celebration of America. The Twitter-imposed emoji said otherwise.
There’s other bad news for conservative fans of Juneteenth. The city of Evanston, Illinois, recently announced it cancelled its July 4th parade allegedly over COVID fears. However, this same city sponsored Juneteenth and Pride Month celebrations in June [Illinois city cancels July 4 parade over COVID-19 concerns but allows Juneteenth and Pride celebrations, by Caitlan McFaul, Fox News, June 20, 2021]. It’s likely the city decided to cancel the patriotic parade to save money for the woker events. The COVID justification is just an excuse to hide the true motive.
As Montana Rep. Matt Rosendale argued in his opposition against the holiday, the Left will seek to replace our Independence Day with the anti-white day. In Evanston, that’s already happened.
